Tom Shields is quite possibly the most emotive painter in South Dakota. One is rarely confronted with the intensity of pigment that he with the level of facility that applies it with. It is definitely expression with the volume turned way up, something akin to a high electrical voltage shooting through your system. Once we get used to this new level of experience, it becomes easier to asses the landscape. One then enters a transcendental world of dragons and beauties, birds and despair. It is as if the mysteries of the inner working of life, the good and the bad are played out within his pictures.
